Cardboard Through The Ages

History of Cardboard

Today cardboard is everywhere. Whether it’s in packaging deliveries, containing or protecting our food or storing other products. But when exactly was cardboard invented and distributed to become so popular today? Cardboard is one of those materials which are completely taken for granted, but what is the history behind cardboard…

Chinese Origins

15th century China is where cardboard fist became a usable product. The UK then took the idea, and the first ever paperboard box was developed by an English company in 1817. Not to be out-done, Scottish born Robert Gair invented the pre-cut cardboard box in 1879. His product could be stored flat and then easily folded when needed, perfect for shipment and general use.

Pleated Paper & Cardboard

The pleated paper used in cardboard was patented in England in 1856. This was used as a liner in hats. Corrugated boxboard was not introduced until 1871 by Albert Jones of New York City. Jones  used as packaging for wrapping bottles and glass lanterns. In 1874, Oliver Long improved upon Jones’ design by inventing corrugated board with liner sheets on both sides. When demand increased for this material, the first machine producing large quantities of corrugated board was designed and built to automate mass-production.

What Is Cardboard Made From?

Cardboard is made from the pulp taken from trees and plants. It is usually produced from rapid growing pine tree pulp. The manufacture of Pulp can also be processed through the recycling of wood chips and shavings.

How Is Cardboard Used In 2023?

The amount of Cardboard we produce is forecast to increase to more than 72 million tons in the coming years. This would be an increase of more than 25 percent compared with cardboard production in 2015. These days with packaging widely used in shipping and with more people buying online and shipping products from other countries, cardboard is in heavier demand than ever before.

Cardboard Recycling

Largely because of the vast amount of cardboard being used today in both businesses and at home, it is becoming more important to dispose of materials correctly. Recycling cardboard will ensure we can repurpose rubbish into other products, and no waste is sent to landfill. This will also reduce the extent to which raw materials will become overused and unnecessarily stretch the resources of the planet.
