History of The Pizza Box

History of The Pizza Box

In the years following the Second World War, Millions of American GI’s had gone home after being exposed to the taste sensation of pizza in Italy. Strong demand from millions of former soldiers ensured the popularity of pizza in the US during the post war years.

The 1950’s brought pizza into the dining rooms across the US. As orders stacked up, pizzas didn’t stack very well. Paper bags didn’t support pizzas much at all. Paperboard bakery boxes were the best option as they offered more support – these were the earliest dedicated pizza boxes. Paperboard did the job well enough and is still sometimes used today.

Whilst paperboard provided a reasonable solution, the material wasn’t meant to withstand the intense moisture introduced by a hot pizza. This resulted in weaker boxes effected by moisture which were at risk of collapsing under their own weight.

The founder of Pizza Chain Domino’s is credited with the development of the pizza specific corrugated cardboard box in the mid 1960s. The pizza box was born and featured a lid which doubled over to snuggly lock onto the base, offering good protection for the precious cargo.

Pizza boxes were designed to allow the safe transport of a baked pizza with the minimum loss in quality from the Pizza maker to the customer. Features soon flowed into the humble pizza box, these included vents for heat and moisture to escape. These days the pizza box is a great space to advertise your brand.
