What Is My Food Packaging Made From?

DEJ’s supply a wide range of products, manufactured from a variety of different materials. Have you ever wondered what a certain material is?  And if they are really environmentally friendly?

We did too – Here’s the DEJ’s Guide to packaging materials.

PLA Bioplastic

Polylactide (PLA) is a natural polyester derived from renewable plant material. During its production process PLA emits up to 80% less CO2 than the comparable manufacture of traditional plastic types such as PS and PET. PLA looks, feels and performs just like traditional plastic but is low emission and plant based, all in all a more sustainable product.

Palm Leaf

Palm Leaf as the name suggests is made from the fallen leaves of Palm Trees. Palm Leaf products are one of the most natural materials. The Palm Leaves are collected, washed and then moulded into plates and bowls. This process uses no chemicals, dyes, glues, lacquers or toxins in the manufacturing process.

PP

Polypropylene is a crystal clear, functional, durable and re-sealable plastic. It is one of the most widely accepted materials in recycling.

PVC

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is another type of recyclable plastic material that offers excellent clarity, strength and sealing performance.

Pulp

Moulded fibre pulp products are made form a sugar cane manufacturing bi-product called Bagasse, an abundant and renewable resource. In the food packaging sector, this natural cellulose is one of the best sustainable alternatives to plastic. Pulp meets all the requirements and is in no way harmful. It is ovenproof, microwavable and freezer friendly. Pulp is 100% compostable and rapidly biodegradable.

Wood

Choosing wood as opposed to plastic is an environmentally friendly option, because it is a naturally biodegradable product. It is free from chemicals and other harmful products. Wood can be produced in sustainably managed forests.

Paper

Reliable and most importantly renewable, paper is an important raw material that replaces many everyday plastic products. Where possible we use paper sourced from responsibly managed plantations. Paper packaging provides a naturally elegant and durable food packaging material.

PET / PETE / RPET

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) is a lightweight plastic that is made to be semi-rigid or rigid which makes it more impact resistant. It helps protect foods or liquids inside the packaging. PET and PETE is widely recyclable.  RPET is Recycled plastic and a very commonly used material now, thanks to its low cost.
