Greaseproof paper products have been around for a long time. Greaseproof paper has its origins in wax paper used in the photographic industry dating back in the 1850s.

How Well Do You Know Greaseproof…

  • Can greaseproof paper go in a microwave?

Yes, greaseproof paper can be used in the microwave and isn’t affected by the radiation of the microwave. However, greaseproof paper can be heated by the contents they are holding and you should be cautious if you are heating food for extended periods of time.

  • Can you use greaseproof paper in the frying pan?

Greaseproof paper can be used in a frying pan and is a useful way of cooking fish in a non-stick pan. Add a splash of oil to a pan and then place the paper on top as this will keep the paper in place. However, always make sure that the paper is cut to fit inside the frying pan and doesn’t drape over the edge as it could be set on fire.

  • Can greaseproof paper be reused?

Yes! You can reuse greaseproof paper before throwing it away. This works especially well when cooking singular items such as cookies, as the old crumbs won’t contaminate the new mix. It doesn’t work as well with cakes as crumbs from the previous bake can be stuck on the paper.

  • Is baking paper the same as greaseproof paper?

While greaseproof paper and baking paper do share a lot of similar properties, they are different. Greaseproof paper contains wax which acts as a barrier for fatty and oily foods. Baking paper is paper coated with silicone and can withstand higher heats. Baking paper is heat resistant up to 220°C and can withstand higher temperatures but watch out for the edges that will turn brown.

  • Can greaseproof paper be eaten?

No, greaseproof paper is not edible. Please do not try to eat greaseproof paper!

  • Is greaseproof paper the same on both sides?

You can use either side of greaseproof paper; it doesn’t make a difference whether you use one side or the other. Each side prevents your cooking or baking from sticking to the baking tray or surface or the food that it is holding.
