History of Paper Cups...

History of Paper Cups...

Thank The Lawyer

Like many things we take for granted in life, paper coffee cups have become a staple in our daily lives, but have you ever wondered about the history behind them? The very first paper coffee cup was invented in 1908 by Lawrence Luellen. The lawyer, from the US city of Boston, was frustrated with the lack of a convenient way to drink coffee during his busy day. He developed the idea for a disposable cup that could be made from paper, he was behind the first cup factory to be established in the United States.

Early Designs

These early cups were called Health Cups, they were made from a kind of waxed paper that was able to withstand the heat of hot drinks. The cups were disposable, which made them useful for people who were always busy, but needed coffee.

During the 1920s, the Solo Cup Company was established and began producing paper cups similar to Luellen's initial design. However, the paper thickness had increased, they also had a coating of wax on the inside to prevent leakage. The Solo Cup Company's paper cups were so popular that they would become the industry standard paper cup.

Post War Boom

Throughout the second World War, paper cups were in high demand as soldiers needed a convenient way to drink coffee and other hot liquids while on the move. Allied governments placed large orders for paper cups, this helped to improve and further develop the processes involved in producing a large volume of paper cups.

The post war years through to the 1960’s saw the use of paper cups continued to grow as more and more fast-food restaurants and coffee shops were thriving. Paper cups were the ideal solution for customers who needed coffee and tea whilst moving around.

Modern Era

These days there are a variety of sizes and types including double and single wall. Many have been designed to be more environmentally friendly. Some companies are using paper cups made from recycled materials, while others are using cups that are biodegradable or compostable with aqueous linings.

Paper cups are a product of our love of hot drinks and our busy lifestyles. Paper cups are a story of innovation, and an ever-growing demand for an easy way to consume hot drinks on the go. The widespread take-up of paper coffee cups has helped developed the coffee culture of many countries around the world.
